No one asks for directions any more

Jan 17, 2023
The image features a vintage compass centered on a yellow background. Surrounding the compass are three large question marks, placed in a way that suggests a sense of searching or inquiry. The compass itself, an instrument used for navigation and orientation, indicates direction, while the question marks imply uncertainty or the search for answers. This juxtaposition might symbolize the quest for direction in life or decision-making.

No one asks for directions any more.

Why?

Because we leverage technology such as Waze or Google Maps which takes us from where we are to wherever we want to go.

There is not yet an app to do this in life.

But I am sure many would like one.

For better or worse.

I remember when I had to find a map or pull out my Thomas Guide and track each turn and freeway to get from origin to my destination.

Then Map Quest provided a website to do this for me.

Now we simply use an app on our phone.

If our phone died or the app had a glitch, my kids would have no idea what to do.

In healthcare, we spend years or decades learning from teachers and experts.

A new vocabulary, new way of thinking and a strategy to take us from problem to solution so that we can offer value, expertise and change lives.

I remember how vitally I relied on this strong foundation when I began my practice on my own. Alone.

I considered it a breakthrough when I discovered a different or better way to handle and help my patients as I veered from the traditional path which I was taught in training.

It took me years to customize my work to match my truth of who I was or who I wanted to be or how I wanted to care for my patients.

Ironically, it was easier for me to make these changes in my work in medicine than in my life.

It took me much more time, discomfort and risk to make changes in my life.

Which is so much more important.

Stealing a phrase from Oprah, one thing I know for sure is that no one can direct my life  from where I am to where I want to go better than me.

"It is up to you to change your life from where you stand to where you want to go."

Because we are all different.

What makes me happy or excited or at peace is different from you.

But for sure, we can all learn from each other and share.

That is one of the many messages of BOOMM.

Breaking Out of the Medical Mindset exists to share the directions that have worked for me to transform so many aspects of my work, life and growth.

BOOMM shares many options for you to decide what you need and what resonates with you.

So that you can pick and choose what resonates with who you are and where you want your life to go.

Then translate your answers into goals for you to track and pictures and experiences for you to feel and live.

This is only the beginning of the course and growth as you break out of more of the same and charter a course toward a better life.

Is it time for you to charter your course from where you are to where you want to be?
