No one asks for directions anymore

No one asks for directions anymore.  

Why?  

Because we leverage technology such as Waze or Google Maps which takes us from where we are to wherever we want to go. 

There is not yet an app to do this in life.

But I am sure many would like one. 

For better or worse.

I remember when I had to find a map or pull out my Thomas Guide and track each turn and freeway to get from the origin to my destination.  

Then Map Quest provided a website to do this for me.  

Now we simply use an app on our phones.  

If our phone died or the app had a glitch, my kids would have no idea what to do.

In healthcare, we spend years or decades learning from teachers and experts.  

A new vocabulary, a new way of thinking and a strategy to take us from problem to solution so that we can offer value, expertise and change lives.  

I remember how vitally I relied on this strong foundation when I began my practice on my own. Alone.  

I considered it a breakthrough when I discovered a different or better way to handle and help my patients as I veered from the traditional path which I was taught in training.  

It took me years to customize my work to match my truth of who I was or who I wanted to be or how I wanted to care for my patients.

Ironically, it was easier for me to make these changes in my work in medicine than in my life. 

It took me much more time, discomfort and risk to make changes in my life.  

Which is so much more important.

Stealing a phrase from Oprah, one thing I know for sure is that no one can direct my life  from where I am to where I want to go better than me. 

"It is up to you to change your life from where you stand to where you want to go."

Because we are all different.  

What makes me happy or excited or at peace is different from you. 

But for sure, we can all learn from each other and share.  

That is one of the many messages of BOOMM.

The first step is create time and space.

Then ask questions to remember who you are and what you want.

Then translate your answers into goals for you to track and pictures and experiences for you to feel and live.  

This is only the beginning of the course and growth as you break out of more of the same and charter a course toward a better life.
